Japan in Depth - New tours beyond the Golden Route

Japan in Depth - New tours beyond the Golden Route. A scrapbook collage of cherry blossoms, matcha tea, customer photos in kimonos, an onsen, Matsumoto Castle, and Japanese street food.
New Japan tours

You've done Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Now go deeper.

Introducing the new 13 Day Japan in Depth and four regional Discovery tours - slow, immersive journeys through Japan's lesser-known heart, designed for travellers who want more than the highlights.

More Japan. Less crowds.

See the Japan you haven't seen yet.

The Golden Route is a great first chapter - but it isn't the whole book. Beyond Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, Japan opens up: historic post towns, lake regions, alpine villages, onsen escapes and regional food traditions most travellers never reach.

Our new Japan series is built around going deeper. One flagship tour at the heart, four regional journeys around it, and a pace that lets you arrive at and experience each place instead of just passing through.

Q&A

Questions for the second-time traveller

The things that come up after the first trip is behind you.

I've already done Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Should I really go back?
That's exactly who this trip is built for. Japan in Depth deliberately skips the three-city loop and routes you through the central and western regions most travellers never reach - Nikko, the Japanese Alps, Ise-Shima, Lake Biwa, Bizen, Kobe. You won't be retracing old ground.
How does this tour compare to a typical Japan itinerary?
It's slower. Where most tours hit ten or more destinations in ten days, Japan in Depth uses seven bases over thirteen days - including a built-in rest day. The trade-off: less ground covered, more time in each place.
Is 13 days enough? Should I add an extension?
Thirteen days is plenty for the core route. If you have more time and a particular curiosity - Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku, or Okinawa - pair Japan in Depth with one of our four shorter Discovery tours. They're designed to extend rather than repeat. Not sure which fits? Take the 2-minute quiz.
What's the best time of year to go?
Spring (late March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the standout windows. Spring brings cherry blossoms but also crowds and higher prices; autumn brings clear skies and brilliant colours with fewer travellers. Both work for this itinerary; departures run year-round.
Can I do this trip without speaking Japanese?
Yes. Your tour leader is bilingual and accompanies the group throughout, and the route is designed for visitors. A few words of Japanese (arigatō, sumimasen) go a long way, but they're not required.
What's the pace really like?
It's described as "Steady" - meaning a real mix of guided sightseeing and free time, with most stops giving you a full day to explore. You'll do 2-4km of walking on touring days, much of it on cobblestones or temple grounds, so comfortable shoes are a must.
Are the small group sizes really small?
This tour runs with 18-24 people. Our Northern Japan Discovery has a max of 20. The social texture of this group size is part of what makes the tour what it is.
What happens if cherry blossoms aren't blooming?
Bloom timing varies year to year. Your tour leader may adjust some stops to chase the colour, but you'll still see Japan's other extraordinary spring sights. We embrace the spirit of hanami - the fleeting beauty of the moment, whether or not it lines up with your itinerary.
Are airport transfers and flights included?
This is a land-only package, so flights and airport transfers are separate. We can help you book both - international flights via our flight portal, transfers via our transfer portal. Both are accessible after you've secured your booking.
